Note- When sailing to windward, the J-22 upper tensions should be tuned so that the leeward uppers are just starting to dangle.  The chart should be used only as a reference point due to the inconsistencies of different tension gauges.

Again,  due to the inconsistencies of tension gauges, the lowers should be checked by eye.  When sailing, sight up the mainsail track with one eye closed. When sailing to windward, close one eye and sight up the mainsail track.  The lowers should be tensioned so that the mast is straight to the hounds.  If the spar is sagging to leeward or windward, adjust lowers accordingly.

Head-stay Length

Head-stay length determines mast prebend and to some degree, helm balance.  To achieve maximum performance from your Ullman Sails, your head stay should set to 4' 10 7/8".

Adjust head-stay length by:

A: While connected to the spar, lay the head stay along the front of the mast down to the gooseneck. Place a piece of tape even with the top of the black band at the gooseneck.

B: Adjust head stay at bow.

C: Adjust turnbuckle until measurement from tape to the intersection of the stem and bow plate is 4' 10 7/8".

Center the Mast at the Hounds

A: Measure 8' back from the stem head fitting and mark each rail with a permanent marker.

B: Attach a steel tape measure to jib halyard and raise a few feet.

C: Tighten each upper shroud length correspondingly from side to side until the mast is centered in the boat. Measure to each 8' mark to check.  Tension uppers to 35 and lowers to 17 on Loos gauge. Your rig is now set up for the base setting of 8-12 knots.

*Note.  Make sure that back-stay has zero tension before attempting to tune rig.

To double check for correct rig set up, first check to see if spar has correct pre-bend (1 1/2"). Pull main halyard tight to gooseneck. The distance between the back of the mast and the main halyard at the spreaders should be very close to (11/2").

Tips

Keep the traveller up as long as possible. Even in strong wind, try to keep it up, never below the center as you will loose pointing ability.

Favor the soft side on tuning numbers for power in the lulls.
